Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

Find out more about staying healthy while travelling.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

What’s next after high school?

Is your child in Year 9 to 12 curious about their career choices? Now they can use LifeLauncher, a free online tool to explore and simplify their career choices.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Encourage your child to jump online and complete the 5-minute personality and subject quizzes to be matched to a range of career options that suit their passions and strengths.

If they take both quizzes, they’ll get more refined suggestions. They can even create free online pinboards to shortlist the courses and jobs that interest them.

When your child creates an account, they can save their searches and build a real understanding of the opportunities and pathways open to them.

What can your child learn about their career options?

Your child can explore the weekly salary of the career options they’re interested in. They’ll also find the employment and growth rates of those careers and the number of workers currently in those fields in Australia.

Each career option shows them the education they need as well as other related careers. They can follow links to other sites to find out more about a course to help them find the best provider for them.

Launch into the future today

Use this tool to chat with your child about their post-school options in a meaningful way.

Inspire your child to find their career match today at LifeLauncher.nsw.gov.au.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

We spoke with a group of Kindergarten students to find out what they had to say about going against the herd. They had some wise words for us on how we can care, respect and support each other in our schools.

Let’s start the year off right and prevent student bullying happening in our playgrounds, classrooms and online. If a group of 5-year-olds know the difference between right and wrong, shouldn’t everyone?

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.

We all know that diet and nutrition is vital to your child's development and growth, but are you aware of the effects it has on your child's brain development and how it can impact their academic achievement?

In this era of convenience, it is easy to reach for pre-packaged and processed foods to cope with busy schedules. However, these foods are usually packed full of sugar and salt which can have adverse health effects. Making a habit of reading food labels can help reduce the risks. It can also help to stabilise your child's energy, improve their mood, maintain a healthy weight and improve their general wellbeing.

In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will discover practical advice for teaching your kids about the benefits of incorporating a healthy diet and good nutrition. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month's edition and we always welcome your feedback.

If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information.

School TV: Cyber Bullying - A Special Report

Many parents will be aware of the tragic circumstances in which Amy 'Dolly' Everett lost her life earlier this year as a result of cyberbullying. Dolly, as she was affectionately known, has since become the face of a campaign to raise awareness of bullying, anxiety, depression and youth suicide. A legacy that Dolly's bereaved family fully support with the intent of sparing other families from the same grief.

In this Special Report, Dr Michael Carr-Gregg highlights the dangers associated with social media and outlines how parents can help reduce the risk of cyberbully. Preventing such a tragedy from reoccurring again, needs to have the support of parents, schools and the wider community. All of which must work together towards reducing the risks associated with bullying. Parents especially, need to be aware of the dangers and be proactive in not accepting bullying behaviour of any sort.

Let's do it for Dolly.

If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information.

Another impressive year during 2016-2017 saw a night of celebration to which we have become accustomed. We had planned on having Australia's greatest ever thrower Dani Stevens (nee Samuels) be our special guest however for only the third time in 16 years Dani was unavailable to attend due to International commitments. Instead we invited stars from the past to act as guest presenters: Paul Stickler, John Thornell, Sharyn Dickson and Matt Outzen did the honours and an enjoyable night ensued with 150 in attendance.

Our sincere thanks to the St Johns Park Bowling club who have for the last fourteen years hosted our function in their grand function room.
Year 7 Vaccination Program Update

Adolescent Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Program

In early 2017 parents/carers of Year 7 students were asked to provide consent for their children to receive three doses of HPV vaccine in the NSW School Vaccination Program.

Most* Year 7 students who have received two doses of HPV vaccine are considered to be fully vaccinated and do not require a further dose.

This change is based on recent international studies that show for children aged 9 to 14 years of age, two doses of HPV vaccine provide the same protection as three doses, as long as the second dose is given at least six months after the first dose. Based on this evidence, the World Health Organization (WHO) now recommends a two-dose HPV schedule, and this has already been adopted in comparable countries (i.e. the UK, Canada, the United States and New Zealand) and is now being adopted in Australia.

In 2017 Year 7 students were given the second dose of HPV vaccine at least six months after the first dose to accommodate the urgent roll-out of the Meningococcal W Response Program to Year 11 and 12 students. Year 7 students who have received only one dose of HPV this year will be offered their second dose in 2018. Parents/carers whose children were vaccinated in 2017 but who still wish for their child to receive a third dose of HPV vaccine can access a free dose from their general practitioner (GP).

* Students with significantly impaired immune systems are still recommended to have three doses of HPV vaccine. Parents of these students should make arrangements to complete the vaccine course with their GP or by calling their local public health unit on 1300 066 055.

More information is available on the NSW Health website at www.health.nsw.gov.au/hpv or by calling your local public health unit on 1300 066 055.

Whether it is starting school for the first time, moving up to a higher grade or embarking on a journey through secondary school, there is no doubt that any school transition is a very exciting time for children and parents. It means your children are growing up!

However, transitioning is an ongoing process. It can continue long after students have entered their new environment and may encounter difficulties at a number of different stages. These stressors may appear as anxiety and frustration and result in negative or disruptive behaviours. Such behaviours can become problematic making the transitioning process even more difficult for children and parents.

In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will learn practical strategies to assist your child during the transition process and reduce stress and anxiety levels. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month's edition and we always welcome your feedback.

If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information.

Here is the link to this month's edition http://westfields-h.schools.nsw.schooltv.me/newsletter/school-transitions

Every year, more and more emphasis is placed on achieving good results in exams causing many students to feel extraordinary pressure and having unrealistic expectations. This month on SchoolTV, parents will find advice on how to help students cope with the pressure and how students can work smarter to achieve the results they desire.

Exams are like a game. Once you know how to play the game, your chances of achieving great results rapidly increase. Parents can learn how to assist their kids to maintain perspective and keep their sanity intact during exam time.

Diet, exercise and sleep all play an important part in helping a student balance a busy schedule and study smarter. Keeping stress levels to a minimum and reducing anxiety can be easily achieved through careful planning and having a supportive environment.

SchoolTV : Impact of Gambling

Parents, our school has subscribed to SchoolTV

Children and teenagers are particularly vulnerable to marketing tactics and this is greatly concerning. Research shows that children as young as 8, are able to easily recall the marketing for sports betting. It is having a major impact on the way in which young people think about the relationship between gambling and sport. The 'normalisation' of sports betting is posing a threat to Australian teenagers.

Children are also being inadvertently exposed to simulated gambling and gambling sites through mobile devices. With video games being extremely popular, this has the potential to blur the boundary between video gaming and gambling. Research suggests that more than 40 per cent of young people, who have an interest in video games with gambling-like features, will also have a preoccupation with gambling or intend to gamble in the future.

A study conducted by the Australian Council for Educational Research, found that up to five per cent of young people in Australia will develop gambling problems before the age of 25.

Congratulations to our 17 relay teams that contested the 2017 NSW Schools Relays at SOPAC on Wednesday 23rd August. 11 teams set new school and/or club records. The most impressive of which was the Girls U15 4x100m relay (Alizart Lolohea, Brown, Adeniran) breaking a record that has stood since 1993 (24 years). The existing record of 52.1 at the time in 1993 was a new NSW record. Our 2017 team set the new record at 51.73. In the 26 year history of the Westfields Athletics Club only 4 female teams of any age have run faster. Even more impressive was the fact that only one of the girls was actually under 15 (Alexandra), the other three were 13 (Shola), 12 (Claudia) and 12 (Latecia).

NCCD Parent Information

	Parent/Carer Information

Criteria for inclusion in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD)

In 2015, all schools in Australia will participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (the national data collection (NCCD)). It is an annual collection that counts the number of school students with a diagnosed disability and/ or had a reasonable level of support/adjustments made to support their participation in education. Therefore it is mandatory for Westfields Sports High School to be involved and be recognised for the work in supporting each child identified with a learning and support need.

The NCCD will collect data on the number of students receiving adjustments who meet the definition of disability under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education.

	For e.g.

 Physical impaired

 Cognitive (intellectual or learning need)

 Sensory

 Social/emotional

Students being provided with an adjustment for disability are included in the Annual Data Collection where there is evidence that:

The adjustments have been provided for a minimum of 10weeks in the 12months preceding the NCCD

The adjustments is based on the assessed education needs of individual students

The adjustments is provided in collaboration and consultation of the student and/or parent/.carers.

The impact of the adjustment is monitored

The functional impact of the student's ability results in the school actively addressing the student specific additional education needs.

These include a student in the NCCD schools will draw on wider range of evidence in school.

Effective management of data to maintain evidence of the process of Personalised Learning and Support for students, forms part of the school's accountability for students with additional learning and support needs.

	THE NCCD IS COMPULSORY

Furthermore, parents/carers of students currently being provided an adjustment for disability cannot ‘opt out' their child/ren from being entered in the data. Staff entering the data will consult all parent/carers of their child/ren that are being included.

	FURTHER INFORMATION

Contact your child's school Learning and Support Team if you have further questions about the NCCD on School Students with Disability and how it may involve your child.

A Week of Harmony Day Activities

Harmony Day might be March 21st this year but all week Westfields Sports staff and students have been raising awareness of and appreciating the many cultures that make up our school, nation and world. The central message for Harmony Day is that ‘everyone belongs', reinforcing the importance of inclusiveness to all Australians.

Orange Ribbon: staff have been waring the orange Harmony Day ribbon all week. Traditionally the colour orange relates to social communication, stimulating two-way conversations. It aids in the development of new ideas and frees the spirit of its limitations, giving us the freedom to be ourselves. At the same time it encourages self-respect and respect of others.

Trivia Quiz: Twenty posters are spread around the school with the Trivia questions testing how much our students know about other cultures, their food, language and beliefs all featured. A prize for the first correctly completed quiz is on offer.

Assembly Items: all three assemblies were entertained and informed by student performances highlighting the diversity of talent and cultures at Westfields Sports.

Music In The Quad: As the week progresses the engagement increases, Thursday will feature music in the Quad from all over the world.

International Food Stall: The week will finish with a treat for our taste buds as Staff and Students are helping to provide for our International Food Stall to be held at Recess in the Quad. Bite sized selections from all over the world will be available from 50c.

Harmony Day March 21st 2015: There are many ways you and your family and friends can celebrate and recognise the benefits and potential that cultural diversity brings.
NAPLAN 2013

Students in Years 7 and 9 sit for the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) test in May each year. The assessments are an opportunity for students to demonstrate what they have learned in class.

For students in Years 7 and 9, there are five tests including two tests in numeracy – a calculator allowed test and a non-calculator test.

The NAPLAN test results and the student reports are released in September.

The results provide information about student achievement that can be used to inform teaching and learning programs. NAPLAN tests provide point-in-time information regarding student progress in literacy and numeracy and are intended to complement the wide range of formal and informal assessments that are already conducted in schools. NAPLAN test results are not intended to be used in isolation from other school-based assessment programs.

The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) has responsibility for the central management of the NAPLAN. From the beginning of 2013, the Board of Studies NSW became the NSW Test Administration Authority (TAA) and is responsible for the administration of the NAPLAN tests in all NSW schools.

Specific information, including details about the tests, student participation, special provisions and reporting can be found on the NAPLAN website. Further details will be available in the near future on the Board of Studies NAPLAN webpages and in the weekly Board Bulletin.

	Test aspects

The tests assess areas of literacy and numeracy.

The following areas of literacy are assessed:

Language conventions – spelling, grammar and punctuation

 Writing

 Reading.

In numeracy, the content areas assessed are:

 Number

 Measurement, chance and data

 Space

 Algebra, function and pattern.

	Test format

For the Writing test, students will be given a stimulus. They are required to write up to three pages in response to the task.

In the Language conventions, Reading and Numeracy tests most questions will require either a multiple-choice response (shade a bubble to indicate the answer) or a constructed response (write the answer in a box or on a line).

	Preparation for the tests

Westfields goes to USA Downunder

USA Downunder

Westfields athletes compete in Queensland

The 2011 USA Downunder tour was an outstanding success. Our group of 17 athletes, 3 coaches and team managers had a very successful meeting against more than 100 athletes from all over the USA. The 5th annual International Tournament was held at the Gold Coast City Council Athletics Centre which is managed by husband and wife coaches Sharon and Peter Hannan (Sharon is Sally Pearson's coach). The venue is a very popular track that runs regular athletics competition during both the summer and winter seasons, and is frequented by elite athletes as they prepare for the Northern Hemisphere circuits. Our 17 athletes performed well coming home with 16 medals and 7pb.'s.

Probably the most impressive performances came from training partners Kyle Alexis and James Thistleton. 15 year old Kyle was very impressive in the 100 metres where he ran personal best times of 11.71 in the heat and 11.59 in the final. He withdrew from the 200m event with tightness, jumped an equal personal best in the high jump, then saved himself for the final event on the calendar the long jump. Kyle was up against the athlete he had beaten by one centimetre to take the 2011 National title earlier this year. It was going to be a monumental re-match. Unfortunately Kyle did not register a jump with 6 fouls, but they were all just a toe over the take-off board.

His nemesis Jamal Emadian- Naini won with 6.45 metres, however Kyle measured four of his leaps at 6.60, two 6.70's and his 6th attempt at 6.80. James Thistleton, in the middle of his heavy preparation training, used this meet as his first hit out of the season to test his fitness. He ran a personal best in 100 metres of 11.17 and looked very strong in his 200m heat. In the 200m final running against Olympic Silver medallist Sean Wroe, James was on target for his first sub 22 second run. He was closing on Wroe with 50 metres to go but felt ahamstring twinge and cruised the 50 metres to the line taking the silver medal.James also ran an impressive 48.79 in the 400m final to take another Silver medal.

Very strong performances came from Tepa Lemi, particularly in the Hammer throw with a near personal best of 45.30m. Tepa competed in Open, under 20's and under 18's picking up 5 medals. WAC coach and number 3 nationallly ranked open discus thrower Christie Chamberlain easily won the discus event with Tepa coming in second. Shidhanth Mudaliar also picked up a Bronze medal in the 100m hurdles competing up an age group with a personal best time, then scored silver medals in Triple jump and Long jump. Medals also went to Michala Ford (Silver) in the 3000m, Ivana Nikitovic (Bronze) in the triple jump, and a Gold medal to Jack Fouracre running an impressive time in the 300m hurdles.

On a sad note Westfields new sprint sensation Hayden Kovacic easily won his heat of the 200 metres but had to withdraw from all further events with a strained hamstring. Hayden was a clear favourite for the 100m and 200m sprint double. Equally disappointing was our sidelined Youth Olympian Kurt Jenner who came along for support with his foot in a protective boot.

Finally, now that Athletics Australia has all but destroyed the Australian All Schools, Westfields Sports will make the USA downunder a permanent fixture on its annual calendar. The Australian All Schools has been reduced to a State versus State Knockout and no longer is an opportunity for qualified athletes to compete. With only three age groups and only the top two athletes permitted to attend, the All Schools is all but dead. Traditionally Westfields would send up to 40 athletes in the past. Accordingly the USA Downunder will fill that void and guarantee that all Westfields students can look forward to an annual trip to a quality athletics meeting.

Full results are in the attached document below.

Westfields @ USA Downunder (docx, 1249 KB)

The Westfields Sports P&C meeting invited School Liaison Police to visit and address the meeting on June 22. Senior Constable Allan Clapham spoke with parents about their concerns regarding "cyber bullying". Parents were given very helpful advice as well as some examples of the danger of placing inappropriate words and images on the internet. Parents were strongly advised to supervise the use of computers in their homes. In addition, a list of common expressions frequently used by teenagers was distributed for parent information.

The P&C plan to have guests address each meeting. Further information will be provided in Westnews
