COURSE DESCRIPTION – ELECTIVE SUBJECT

Stage 5 Information Software Technology (IST) is now integrated into all aspects of life, be it internet enabled refrigerators, networked game consoles or next generation mobile phones. The study of information technology allows students to become informed users of such devices. Information and Software.

IST is designed to allow students to learn about information technology and its impact on society. The course will allow students to be become effective users of information processing devices through an understanding of basic principles behind information technology as well as practical mastery of digital tools.

 

MAIN FOCUS AREAS

Throughout the two years of the course the following three main streams will be followed.

Building practical skills in the effective use of software:

  • HTML editors
  • MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint)
  • Software Programming using Python and Scratch
  • Adobe CS tools for photographic manipulation and creation (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator)

Understanding the theory behind the physical parts of a modern computer system:

  • Hardware: monitors, hard drives, graphics cards, memory, digital cameras etc.
  • Software: operating systems, application software, programming languages, multimedia authoring, games etc.
  • Networking: email, the Internet, data representation, web browsers, routers, switches, protocols etc.

Understanding the ethical and social impact of technology:

  • The effect of the Internet on the way people communicate
  • Privacy Software
  • Piracy
  • Viruses
  • Ewaste

The 2 year course will be taught in a project based format covering the following syllabus content.
