Mathematics

The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10. 

By studying mathematics, students learn to work mathematically – developing fluency, understanding, problem-solving, reasoning and communication skills.

The syllabus consists of the following strands:

  • number and algebra
  • measurement and geometry
  • statistics and probability.

In Year 11 and 12, the study of mathematics is optional. Courses offered include:

  • Mathematics Extension 2 (Year 12 only)
  • Mathematics Extension 1
  • Mathematics Advanced
  • Mathematics Standard 2
  • Mathematics Standard 1 (Optional HSC examination)
  • Mathematics Life Skills.

About the faculty

Westfields Sports High School Mathematics Faculty is committed to fostering a positive learning environment, effectively addressing the specific needs of each individual student to enable them to achieve their personal best. Our aim is to promote students' appreciation of mathematics and develop their mathematical thinking, understanding, confidence and competence in solving mathematical problems.

The experienced staff offers a large range of teaching strategies including technology in the classroom. Some of our staff are also experienced Higher School Certificate external markers.

Some of the programs offered to our students within the Mathematics Faculty include:

  • Accelerated Mathematics Program in Year 9, 10 & 11. These students are able to attempt the Higher School Certificate ahead of their Year group
  • The Annual Australian Mathematics Competition
  • MathsLab, our problem based learning class taken by year 7 students once per week. 
  • Homework centre after school on Tuesdays, Wednesday and Thursdays in the library.
  • Tutorial groups run throughout the week in B Block.
  • Mathletics including the use of school computers to complete maths activities and mathematical games
  • Maths Online, an additional study resource used to improve understanding, skills and maximise results.  
  • Edrolo, a study resource available to our year 12 HSC students studying all levels of mathematics.
