Aim

Westfields Sports strength and conditioning program is in place to compliment specific sports training. The aim is to develop one or a number of the following physical attributes : strength, speed, power, endurance, stability / balance or to help prevent injuries. Often these attributes cannot be developed to their potential without some form of strength training. Programs are designed so that gains in strength will result directly to improved performance in the athlete's chosen sport.

Course Structure

Training sessions take place in the Westfields Sports Weights Room or on the field / court as is the case with a sprint session. Most sessions are 50-60 minutes. The Weights Room currently has a maximum capacity of 40 athletes at any one time and demand for places is high. It is a privilege to use this facility and only those with excellent behaviour and serious dedication can use this resource.

Athletes from a range of sports currently utilise strength and conditioning to complement their specific sport programs. These include athletics, basketball, cricket, football, netball, rugby league and rugby union.

Safety

The strength and conditioning training that Westfields Sports athletes undertake is as safe as the regular on field / court training, and in some cases, even safer. The reason for this is that weight training is done in a very controlled and predictable environment. Each student is given a program that is appropriate for their personal needs as well as the needs of their sport. The program takes into consideration their body type, injury history and training background. The loads are controlled through a rigid program structure ensuring the athlete does not lift inappropriate amounts. Athletes are not allowed to do anything outside this program unless approved by the Strength and Conditioning Coach.

Further information on safety or any other aspect of the strength and conditioning program is available by contacting Tony Wignell at the school.
