Diverse Learning Space
In 2025, Westfields Sports High School established a Diverse Learning Support, specialising in supporting students with a Neurological Disorder (Autism).
The Diverse Learning faculty consists of a Head Teacher Diverse Learning, Diverse Learning Teachers and Student Learning Support Officers (SLSOs).
With smaller class sizes the students are able to access the mandatory courses - English, Mathematics, Science, HSIE, Work and the Community, and Technological and Applied Studies that are taught by Specialist teachers. In negotiation with the Parent/Carer, Diverse Learning Team a student may be integrated into mainstream classes depending on their abilities and are taught by mainstream teachers in discrete classes for various subjects.
Our Focus
The Diverse Learning Team takes responsibility for creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment that promotes both academic and social growth for students in a diverse learning space. Our goal is to work within a co-educational public sports high school and provide a collaborative approach, working with various school staff and community members to support students with individual learning and developmental needs. The team uses data to identify areas for improvement and provides targeted feedback to enhance teaching and learning outcomes.
The school encourages students to thrive and feel a strong sense of belonging within the school community. By fostering a culture where students are Safe, Respectful Learners, the aim is to help them grow and develop the skills necessary to successfully function in the wider community. This holistic approach ensures that students not only achieve academically but also build the personal and social abilities they need for life beyond school.
Individual Education Plans
Individual Education Plan meetings are conducted each year for all students to provide an opportunity for students, parents/carers, teachers and support service personnel to discuss educational programs and wider support needs. They are reviewed yearly and or on a needs basis.
Opportunity for adjusted teaching methods and Life Skills Pathway
An appropriate curriculum is delivered through the provision of modified teaching programs and strategies. The use of technology is an important feature of the Diverse Learning space and the wider school.
The NSW Education Authority (NESA) recognises that all students are entitled to participate in and progress through the curriculum. Courses based on Life Skills outcomes and content provide options for students with disability in Years 7–12 who cannot access the regular course outcomes, particularly students with an intellectual disability. An informed decision as to what type of educational program will be held in negotiation with the student, parent/carer and DL Team to
provide a more relevant, accessible and meaningful option for students. Many of our students choose to undertake a Life Skills course of study for most or all of their subjects. The implications of undertaking a Life Skills course of study should be discussed with your child’s teachers.
Extracurricular and extension
Westfields Sports High School provides sports, recreation and community access, where a weekly sports program is provided to students in years 7.
Many sporting activities are undertaken in preparing students to represent their school in sports carnivals throughout the year, including swimming and athletics carnivals. A program of recreational activities is also a feature. Students will have the opportunity to participate in some activities such as ten-pin bowling, board games, computer games, dance and nature trails.
Students participate in community access visits to complement school-based learning programs with authentic life experiences. Community access outings may include visits to places such as shopping centres, parks and cinemas.
